“Why didn’t we know about the unfair funding of WI public schools? How did this happen? How can I stay informed?” were recurring questions heard from community members during Prescott School’s recent operating levy. This page is a result of those questions and was created to provide accurate and current information about the state of public school funding crisis in Wisconsin: how we got here and how you can advocate for change.
In 2024, almost half of WI districts sought a bond (building and maintenance) or operating (keeping the lights on, staff paid, programs) referendum. The financial constraints school districts face is not new; there has been a gradual decline in funding due to a series of WI state policy decisions.
