What is STEM?
Science, Technology, Engineering, Math (STEM) education is an integrated, interdisciplinary approach to learning that provides hands-on and relevant learning experiences for students. STEM authentically engages students and equips students with critical thinking, problem-solving, creative, artistic and collaborative skills, and ultimately establishes connections between the school, workplace, community and the global economy.
Who is the STEM Committee?
Michel Kosmalski (Director of Teaching & Learning), Brian Koenig (HS Tech Ed) , Angela Boles (HS FCS), Bryce McCauley (HS Math), Anne Kressly (6-12 Art), Karey Sizemore (2nd grade teacher), Erica Keezer (K-5 Media).
Prescott STEM Committee Mission
Our mission is to identify our current STEM reality, create a STEM vision for the Prescott School District and advocate for the necessary resources to reach that vision. Key components of our work must include educating and communicating with both our school community and the community at large as we develop our STEM model for the Prescott School District.
Prescott STEM Committee VISION
Students K-12 experience hands-on, inquiry-based units of learning that are incorporated into the cross-disciplinary curriculum through:
- Students K-12 creating products that investigate or solve real-world problems
- Students and parents are aware of the benefits of all post-secondary options and how current high school offerings fit into those pathways
- Articulated STEM problem-solving program K-12 (possibly DI K-8, Science Olympiad 9-12, Defined STEM)
- Fabrication Lab/Maker Space/Innovation Area at elementary/middle school level that exposes students to opportunities at the high school
- STEM programs and opportunities are enhanced through outside funding opportunities
- Students at each level have multiple extracurricular STEM opportunities to enrich their classroom experiences
