This policy deals with procedure to follow in case of an emergency at the Prairie Island Nuclear Plant.
Important Issues to Remember
- Evacuation will only occur within 10 miles of the Nuclear Plant, which does not include the City of Prescott.
- Children in Prescott Schools will not be evacuated or transported to other locations because of an incident at the plant.
- School children living within 10 miles of the Nuclear Power Plant, but attending school in Prescott, may be held at school for pickup by parents.
- Decisions on evacuation of the 10 mile area and holding of students at the schools will be made and communicated to the Prescott School Superintendent’s office by the Pierce County Emergency Operations Center location in Ellsworth.
Notification Procedures in Case of a Power Plant Incident
- Xcel Energy notifies Pierce County Sheriff’s office of a possible emergency.
- The Sheriff’s office notifies the Prescott Superintendent of Schools.
- The Prescott Superintendent notifies the Transportation Supervisor at the bus garage about the potential of holding students living within the 10mile zone at the school.
- The Transportation Supervisor notifies the appropriate bus drivers not to run their route because of an incident at the plant.
- The Superintendent notifies Malone Elementary, Middle School, High School, and St. Joseph’s School to hold the affected students at their schools for the parents to pick them up.
- Parents will be notified by local media about pickup times and locations.
- The Superintendent maintains constant communication with all schools to furnish updated information.
- The principals of the buildings will keep the school informed through his/her office and control the flow of information and decisions at that building level.
